Part of a larger overall roadway re-construction, the project provides an enhanced pedestrian and multi-modal environment along a 10-block section of historic downtown Ely. The local community has a proud multi-cultural heritage which is reflected in the design theme. Each block is dedicated to telling the story of one cultural group and their contributions to the overall community. These stories are expressed using custom tree guards and porcelain medallions inset into the sidewalk. There are 47 unique medallion designs representing the history and traditions of eleven distinct cultures. In addition, three large community entry signs are designed to reflect the transportation and natural history of the community. Additional streetscape enhancements include decorative pavement along with street tree and understory plantings.
