awards: APWA Environmental Project of the Year (2023)
About This Project
SBX is the first phase of the overall Reno Spaghetti Bowl project. LAGE Design was responsible for conceptual designs, writing the project’s landscape and aesthetic technical provisions, and performing construction observation and submittal reviews for the Department. The Department felt that it was critical to get approval of design elements from the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony (RSIC), a crucial stakeholder with a vested interest in the project. We worked closely with the Department’s landscape architects and representatives of the RSIC to design landscape and aesthetics treatments that reflected the history, culture, and traditions of the local tribes. The fi nal design captures themes expressed in numerous meetings with RSIC and Department staff. Linear “story walls” and pre-cast sculptures at the southeast corner of Second/Glendale St. tell the creation story of how the people came to the area. Additional “story walls” and a large bronze sculpture celebrate the rich culture and traditions of the Paiute, Washoe, and Shoshone tribes. Custom formliner patterns adorn retaining walls, soundwalls, and visual screening walls.
